would be very comfortable for me, because it would leave me a

considerable amount of leisure; but cases would not get hoard

as rapidly even as I have been able to take them; and I consider

that it would be detrimental to the public interest to adopt

the plan. The solicitors are expected to give me an estimate of

the number of days required for the trial of a case when it is

set down for hearing. We all do our best to keep the hearing

within those bounds; but as no one ever knows what a Chinese

witness is going to do, the calculations are sometimes, through

no fault of anyone concerned, upset. It is to this overlapping

of cases I have referred when I have reported "deadlocks" in

previous correspondence. I can only imagine that Mr. Smith knew

nothing about a system on which alone the Court work can be

even attempted to be dealt with, or he would not have given such

'misleading advice.

Equally useless in my opinion, though

perhaps more plausible, is the suggestion that "the Chief

Justice and Pulsne Judge should take the criminal sessions

alternately, or the Puisne Judge always take the Civil cases in

Original Jurisdiction during Criminal Sessions". The last part

of the suggestion is obviously impracticable, as I may be in
